RESUMEN

Physiological processes, such as the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), are mediated by changes in protein interactions. These changes may be better reflected in protein covariation within a cellular cluster than in the temporal dynamics of cluster-average protein abundance. To explore this possibility, we quantified proteins in single human cells undergoing EMT. Covariation analysis of the data revealed that functionally coherent protein clusters dynamically changed their protein-protein correlations without concomitant changes in the cluster-average protein abundance. These dynamics of protein-protein correlations were monotonic in time and delineated protein modules functioning in actin cytoskeleton organization, energy metabolism, and protein transport. These protein modules are defined by protein covariation within the same time point and cluster and, thus, reflect biological regulation masked by the cluster-average protein dynamics. Thus, protein correlation dynamics across single cells offers a window into protein regulation during physiological transitions.

The carrier losses due to radiative recombination in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are studied using fully microscopic many-body models. The density- and temperature-dependent losses in various Mo- and W-based materials are shown to be dominated by Coulomb correlations beyond the Hartree-Fock level. Despite the much stronger Coulomb interaction in 2D materials, the radiative losses are comparable-if not weaker-than in conventional III-V materials. A strong dependence on the dielectric environment is found in agreement with experimental results.

One long-standing analytic approach in adoption studies is to examine correlations between features of adoptive homes and outcomes of adopted children (hereafter termed 'measured environment correlations') to illuminate environmental influences on those associations. Although results from such studies have almost uniformly suggested modest environmental influences on adopted children's academic achievement, other work has indicated that adopted children's achievement is routinely higher than that of their reared-apart family members, often substantially so. We sought to understand this discrepancy. We examined academic achievement and literacy-promotive features of the home in 424 yoked adoptive/biological families participating in the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS; i.e., adopted children, adoptive mothers, birth mothers, and biological siblings of the adopted children remaining in the birth homes) using an exhaustive modeling approach. Results indicated that, as anticipated, adopted children scored up to a full standard deviation higher on standardized achievement tests relative to their birth mothers and reared-apart biological siblings. Moreover, these achievement differences were associated with differences in the literacy-promotive features of the adoptive and birth family homes, despite minimal measured environment correlations within adoptive families. A subsequent simulation study highlighted noise in measured environmental variables as an explanation for the decreased utility of measured environment correlations. We conclude that the field's heavy focus on measured environment correlations within adoptive families may have obscured detection of specific environmental effects on youth outcomes, and that future adoption studies should supplement their measured environment analyses with mean differences between reared-apart relatives.

Segawa syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive form of dopa-responsive dystonia resulting from TH gene dysfunction. Patients typically exhibit symptoms such as generalized dystonia, rigidity, tremors, infantile Parkinsonism, and pseudo-spastic paraplegia. Levodopa is often an effective treatment. Due to its rarity, high heterogeneity, and poorly understood pathological mutation and phenotype spectrums, as well as genotype-phenotype and genotype-treatment outcome correlations, Segawa syndrome poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. In our study, through clinical and molecular analyses of three Chinese Segawa patients, we re-evaluated the pathogenicity of a TH mutation (c.880G>C;p.G294R) previously categorized as "Conflicting classifications of pathogenicity" in ClinVar. Also, we summarized the clinical phenotypes of all reported Segawa syndrome cases until 2023 and compared them with our patients. We identified a novel phenotype, "cafe-au-lait macules," not previously observed in Segawa patients. Additionally, we discussed the correlation between specific genotypes and phenotypes, as well as genotypes and treatment outcomes of our three cases. Our findings aim to enhance the understanding of Segawa syndrome, contributing to improved diagnosis and treatment approaches in the future.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGID), such as eosinophilic gastritis (EoG), eosinophilic enteritis, and eosinophilic colitis (EoC), are chronic inflammatory conditions characterized by persistent gastrointestinal symptoms and elevated levels of activated eosinophils in the gastrointestinal tract. EoG and eosinophilic duodenitis (EoD) are strongly associated with food allergen triggers and TH2 inflammation, whereas EoC shows minimal transcriptomic overlap with other EGIDs. The level of expression of certain genes associated with TH2 immune response is associated with certain histopathologic findings of EoG, EoD, and EoC. Current immune therapy for EoG depletes tissue eosinophilia with persistence of other histopathologic features of disease.

This study aims to provide a thorough characterization of dissolved organics in oil sands process water (OSPW) in field-based aquatic mesocosms at both molecular and bulk measurement levels using multiple analytical methods. In a 3-year outdoor mesocosm experiment, the analysis of naphthenic acid (NA) species was conducted using ultra-performance liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOFMS). The results revealed the removal of both total NAs (38% and 35%) and classical NAs (O2-NAs, 58% and 49%) in undiluted and half-diluted OSPW, respectively. The increased ratios of oxidized NAs (O3-O6 NAs) to classical NAs suggested a transformation trend. The results also indicated that O2-NAs with higher carbon number and lower double bond equivalent (DBE) were more easily degraded in the mesocosm systems. Biomimetic extraction using solid-phase microextraction (BE-SPME) measurement displayed 26% (undiluted OSPW) and 30% (half-diluted OSPW) decrease in total bioavailable organics over 3 years. Naphthenic acids fraction compounds (NAFCs) obtained by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) were also determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Reduction in acute toxicity for undiluted (43%) and half-diluted (26%) OSPW was observed over 3 years, which are well correlated with the decreases of NAs and BE-SPME concentrations. Moreover, BE-SPME values were found to be linearly correlated with total NAs concentrations (r = 0.96) and NAFCs (r = 0.96). Additionally, the linear relationships of individual O2-O6 NA species and BE-SPME concentrations unveiled the changes in the relative abundances of O2-O6 NA species in total bioavailable organics over time in the mesocosms. The present study has provided comprehensive insights by integrating various analytical methods, contributing valuable information for assessing the effectiveness of aquatic mesocosm systems in studying the temporal changes of organics in OSPW.

Introduction. During the development of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Antioquia, we experienced epidemiological peaks related to the α, É£, ß, ƛ, and δ variants. δ had the highest incidence and prevalence. This lineage is of concern due to its clinical manifestations and epidemiological characteristics. A total of 253 δ sublineages have been reported in the PANGOLIN database. The sublineage identification through genomic analysis has made it possible to trace their evolution and propagation. Objective. To characterize the genetic diversity of the different SARS-CoV-2 δ sublineages in Antioquia and to describe its prevalence. Materials and methods. We collected sociodemographic information from 2,675 samples, and obtained 1,115 genomes from the GISAID database between July 12th, 2021, and January 18th, 2022. From the analyzed genomes, 515 were selected because of their high coverage values (>90%) to perform phylogenetic analysis and to infer allele frequencies of mutations of interest. Results. We characterized 24 sublineages. The most prevalent was AY.25. Mutations of interest as L452R, P681R, and P681H were identified in this sublineage, comprising a frequency close to 0.99. Conclusions. This study identified that the AY.25 sublineage has a transmission advantage compared to the other δ sublineages. This attribute may be related to the presence of the L452R and P681R mutations associated in other studies with higher evasion of the immune system and less efficacy of drugs against SARS-CoV-2.


Introducción. Durante el desarrollo de la pandemia por SARS-CoV-2 en Antioquia se presentaron picos epidemiológicos relacionados con las variantes α, É£, ß, ƛ y δ, donde δ tuvo la mayor incidencia y prevalencia. Este linaje se considera una variante de preocupación dadas las manifestaciones clínicas que desencadena y sus características epidemiológicas. Se han informado 253 sublinajes δ en la base de datos PANGOLIN. La identificación de estos sublinajes mediante análisis genómico ha permitido rastrear su evolución y propagación. Objetivo. Caracterizar la diversidad genética de los diferentes sublinajes δ de SARSCoV-2 en Antioquia y determinar su prevalencia. Materiales y métodos. Se recopiló información sociodemográfica de 2.675 muestras y de 1.115 genomas del repositorio GISAID entre el 12 de julio de 2021 y el 18 de enero de 2022. Se seleccionaron 501 por su alto porcentaje de cobertura (>90 %) para realizar análisis filogenéticos e inferencia de frecuencias alélicas de mutaciones de interés. Resultados. Se caracterizaron 24 sublinajes donde el más prevalente fue AY.25. En este sublinaje se identificaron mutaciones de interés como L452R, P681R y P681H, que comprendían una frecuencia cercana a 0,99. Conclusiones. Este estudio permitió identificar que el sublinaje AY.25 tiene una ventaja de transmisión en comparación con los otros sublinajes δ. Esto puede estar relacionado con la presencia de las mutaciones L452R y P681R que en otros estudios se han visto asociadas con una mayor transmisibilidad, evasión del sistema inmunitario y menor eficacia de los medicamentos contra SARS-CoV-2.

Positronium (Ps) is a valuable probe to investigate nanometric or sub-nanometric cavities in non-metallic materials, where Ps can be confined. Accessible experimental measurements concern the lifetime of trapped Ps, which is largely influenced by pick-off processes, depending on the size of the cavity as well as on the density of the electrons belonging to the surface of the host trap. Another relevant physical quantity is the contact density, that is the electron density at the positron position, which is usually found to be well below the vacuum value. Here, we review the principal models that have been formulated to account and explain for these physical properties of confined Ps. Starting with models, treating Ps as a single particle formulated essentially to study pick-off, we go on to describe more refined two-particle models because a two-body model is the simplest approach able to describe any change in the contact density, observed in many materials. Finally, we consider a theory of Ps annihilation in nanometric voids in which the exchange correlations between the electron of Ps and the outer electrons play a fundamental role. This theory is not usually taken into account in the literature, but it has to be considered for a correct theory of pick-off annihilation processes.

This study aims to predict specific soil parameters based on quantitative and qualitative correlations between electrical and geotechnical data. A total of 21 geotechnical boreholes followed by sampling, 21 light dynamic penetrometer tests, and 76 vertical electrical sounding surveys were carried out in Maroua 1st. The electrical resistivity data of the soil layers were obtained through 1D and 2D inversions of the ERT surveys. The geotechnical data were obtained from field tests and laboratory experiments. The statistical analysis of the entire dataset indicates that most of the samples are clay formations, as demonstrated by the means of variables and low variance coefficients, enabling qualitative identification. The distribution analysis of the parameters confirms the complexity of the physical characteristics of soils and the measurement procedures for each parameter. The Spearman's rank correlation matrix indicates that these observations can be used to propose predictive models for free swelling, allowable stress, natural water content, and electrical resistivity. Correlations between free swelling (εg) and other variables are not significant, as the degree of significance is lower than the fixed limit, except for models εg - W (R2 = 0.94), εg - ρ (Ώ.m) (R2 = 0.803), and εg - σ adm (R2 = 0.757). Grouping variables in multiple linear regression enables the development of a mathematical model. The predicted values of εg from this model demonstrate good agreement with the measured values for a validity domain of 0-16 %. The soil's natural water content has a strong correlation (R2 = 0.80 and rs = - 0.87) with electrical resistivity, meaning that an increase in water content results in a decrease in electrical resistivity. The permissible stress σadm has a strong correlation (R2 = 0.89 and rs = 0.85) with electrical resistivity. This indicates that changes in soil electrical resistivity are associated with soil stiffness.

In this study, a nested grouped random parameter negative binomial framework is proposed to model crash counts at the segment level, a three-level longitudinal framework. The proposed model accounts for correlations along county routes and over time and thus includes a time variable, the year index, to analyze crash counts. The model is applied to crashes on undivided two-lane arterial roads in Ohio from 2012 to 2017. The results present two variants of the model: one with varying intercepts and fixed slopes and the other with varying intercepts and slopes. Both variants have comparable interpretations concerning the fixed parameters, but the latter variant exhibits a significantly improved fit and provides additional information on the interpretations. The results show a significant quadratic relationship between the time variable and the crash count, indicating that, on average, the crash count of segments increases with a decreasing rate as time variable increases. Regarding random parameters, the findings show that 17% of segments within routes and 2% of routes exhibit crash counts that decrease at accelerating downward trend as time variable increases. The effect of the natural logarithm of the segment length varies significantly across different routes, with an increase in this value primarily leading to an increase in crashes. On the other hand, the effect of the total shoulder width also varies across routes, but unlike the former, an increase in this value generally results in a decrease in crashes. The proposed model shows high forecast accuracy for crash count prediction, making it a valuable tool for informed decision-making in safety improvement.

PURPOSE: We aimed to examine the correlation between clinical characteristics and the pathogenic gene variants in patients with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center study in patients with PCD followed at the University Hospitals Leuven. We included patients with genetically confirmed PCD and described their genotype, data from ultrastructural ciliary evaluation and clinical characteristics. Genotype/phenotype correlations were studied in patients with the most frequently involved genes. RESULTS: We enrolled 74 patients with a median age of 25.58 years. The most frequently involved genes were DNAH11 (n = 23) and DNAH5 (n = 19). The most frequent types of pathogenic variants were missense (n = 42) and frameshift variants (n = 36) and most patients had compound heterozygous variants (n = 44). Ciliary ultrastructure (p < 0.001), situs (p = 0.015) and age at diagnosis (median 9.50 vs 4.71 years, p = 0.037) differed between DNAH11 and DNAH5. When correcting for situs this difference in age at diagnosis was no longer significant (p = 0.973). Patients with situs inversus were diagnosed earlier (p = 0.031). Respiratory tract microbiology (p = 0.161), lung function (cross-sectional, p = 0.829 and longitudinal, p = 0.329) and chest CT abnormalities (p = 0.202) were not significantly different between DNAH11 and DNAH5 variants. CONCLUSION: This study suggests a genotype-phenotype correlation for some of the evaluated clinical characteristics of the two most frequently involved genes in this study, namely DNAH11 and DNAH5.

Previous studies have shown abnormal long-range temporal correlations in neuronal oscillations among individuals with Major Depressive Disorders, occurring during both resting states and transitions between resting and task states. However, the understanding of this effect in preclinical individuals with depression remains limited. This study investigated the association between temporal correlations of neuronal oscillations and depressive symptoms during resting and task states in preclinical individuals, specifically focusing on male action video gaming experts. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), Lifetimes, and Waitingtimes were employed to explore temporal correlations across long-range and short-range scales. The results indicated widespread changes from the resting state to the task state across all frequency bands and temporal scales. Rest-task DFA changes in the alpha band exhibited a negative correlation with depressive scores at most electrodes. Significant positive correlations between DFA values and depressive scores were observed in the alpha band during the resting state but not in the task state. Similar patterns of results emerged concerning maladaptive negative emotion regulation strategies. Additionally, short-range temporal correlations in the alpha band echoed the DFA results. These findings underscore the state-dependent relationships between temporal correlations of neuronal oscillations and depressive symptoms, as well as maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, in preclinical individuals.

Sea cucumbers are a rich source of bioactive compounds and are gaining popularity as nutrient-rich seafood. They are consumed as a whole organism in Pacific regions. However, limited data are available on the comparison of their lipid composition and nutritional value. In this study, untargeted liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry was applied to comprehensively profile lipids in the skin, meat, and intestinal contents of three color-distinct edible sea cucumbers. Multivariate principal component analysis revealed that the lipid composition of the intestinal contents of red, black, and blue sea cucumbers differs from that of skin, and meats. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are abundant in the intestinal contents, followed by meats of sea cucumber. Lipid nutritional quality assessments based on fatty acid composition revealed a high P:S ratio, low index of atherogenicity, and high health promotion indices for the intestinal contents of red sea cucumber, suggesting its potential health benefits. In addition, hierarchical cluster analysis revealed that the intestinal contents of sea cucumbers were relatively high in PUFA-enriched phospholipids and lysophospholipids. Ceramides are abundant in black skin, blue meat, and red intestinal content samples. Overall, this study provides the first insights into a comprehensive regio-specific profile of the lipid content of sea cucumbers and their potential use as a source of lipid nutrients in food and nutraceuticals.

Reports on development of resilient wheat mutants to aphid infestation-causing heavy losses to wheat production in many parts of the world, are scanty. The present study aimed to identify genetic diversity of wheat mutants in terms of varying degree of resistance to aphid infestation which can help protect wheat crop, improve yields and enhance food security. Resistance response to aphid infestation was studied on newly developed 33 wheat mutants, developed through irradiating seed of an elite wheat cultivar "Punjab-11" with gamma radiations, during three normal growing seasons at two sites. Data on various traits including aphid count per plant, biochemical traits, physiological traits and grain yield was recorded. Meteorological data was also collected to unravel the impact of environmental conditions on aphid infestation on wheat plants. Minimum average aphid infestation was found on Pb-M-2725, Pb-M-2550, and Pb-M-2719 as compared to the wild type. High yielding mutants Pb-M-1323, Pb-M-59, and Pb-M-1272 supported the moderate aphid infestation. The prevailing temperature up to 25 °C showed positive correlation (0.25) with aphid count. Among biochemical traits, POD (0.34), TSP (0.33), TFA (0.324) exhibited a high positive correlation with aphid count. In addition, CAT (0.31), TSS (0.294), and proline content (0.293) also showed a positive correlation with aphid count. However, all physiological traits depicted negative correlation with aphid count, while, a very weak correlation (0.12) was found between mean aphid count and grain yield. In PCA biplots, the biochemical variables clustered together with aphid count, while physiological variables grouped with grain yield. Biochemical parameters contributed most, towards first dimension of the PCA (48.6%) as compared to the physiological variables (13%). The FAMD revealed that mutant lines were major contributor towards total variation; Pb-M-1027, Pb-M-1323, Pb-M-59 were found to be the most diverse lines. The PCA revealed that biochemical parameters played a significant role in explaining variations in aphid resistance, emphasizing their importance in aphid defense mechanisms. The identified mutants can be utilized by the international wheat community for getting insight into the molecular circuits of resistant mechanism against aphids as well as for designing new KASP markers. This study also highlights the importance of considering both genetic and environmental factors in the development of resilient wheat varieties and pave the way for further investigations into the molecular mechanisms underpinning aphid resistance in wheat.

Minerals are the essential micronutrients for human health. Brown rice is a whole-grain food rich in minerals, with its bran portion limiting the application of minerals. In the present study, the changes in the contents of 23 different minerals (Na, Mg, K, Ca, B, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Sb, Ba, Li, Al, As, Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb) in brown rice were evaluated during 17, 24, 30, 35, and 48 h of germination. The results showed that germination was associated with the decreased contents of Pb, Cd, As, Al, Li, Ba, Fe, Cr, Co, V, and Hg, and the increased content of Na in brown rice (p < 0.05). In contrast, this process was not significantly influential on the contents of Mg, K, Ca, B, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Sn, Sb, and Mn (p > 0.05). In addition, significant correlations were found among most of the mineral contents. Furthermore, according to the principal component analysis, three principal components of the different mineral contents were extracted to explain 96.60% of the cumulative variances. In summary, these findings demonstrated that germination represented a feasible approach to regulating and controlling the distribution of the mineral elements in brown rice, optimizing the levels of the mineral contents, and thus reducing the potential health risks.

Introduction: Mental disorders are a significant concern in contemporary society, with a pressing need to identify biological markers. Long-range temporal correlations (LRTC) of brain rhythms have been widespread in clinical cohort studies, especially in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, research on LRTC in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is severely limited. Given the high co-occurrence of OCD and MDD, we conducted a comparative LRTC investigation. We assumed that the LRTC patterns will allow us to compare measures of brain cortical balance of excitation and inhibition in OCD and MDD, which will be useful in the area of differential diagnosis. Methods: In this study, we used the 64-channel resting state EEG of 29 MDD participants, 26 OCD participants, and a control group of 37 volunteers. Detrended fluctuation analyzes was used to assess LRTC. Results: Our results indicate that all scaling exponents of the three subject groups exhibited persistent LRTC of EEG oscillations. There was a tendency for LRTC to be higher in disorders than in controls, but statistically significant differences were found between the OCD and control groups in the entire frontal and left parietal occipital areas, and between the MDD and OCD groups in the middle and right frontal areas. Discussion: We believe that these results indicate abnormalities in the inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitter systems, predominantly affecting areas related to executive functions.

Recent studies have shown that people can believe that unhealthy foods taste better, even if healthy and unhealthy foods are equally as tasty. Specifically, when tasty and unhealthy foods are frequent in one context but rare in another, people perceive unhealthy foods to taste better, even if health and taste are unrelated. Given that people often consume food in one context, the current study investigated whether false beliefs about the health-taste relationship in foods can also occur in just one single context, in which either healthy or unhealthy foods are predominant, when there is no contrasting context where the respective other food is predominant. In two experiments (N = 342), we presented participants with pictures of meals from a single context and varied the frequency of healthy and unhealthy foods between participants. Although healthy and unhealthy foods tasted equally as good, participants believed that (un)healthy foods tasted better when there were more of them. This research demonstrates that health-taste beliefs might be changed by increasing the relative frequency of healthy foods in the environment overall, not by just offering some healthy and tasty foods.

RESUMEN

Objective. The development of electrical pulse stimulations in brain, including deep brain stimulation, is promising for treating various brain diseases. However, the mechanisms of brain stimulations are not yet fully understood. Previous studies have shown that the commonly used high-frequency stimulation (HFS) can increase the firing of neurons and modulate the pattern of neuronal firing. Because the generation of neuronal firing in brain is a nonlinear process, investigating the characteristics of nonlinear dynamics induced by HFS could be helpful to reveal more mechanisms of brain stimulations. The aim of present study is to investigate the fractal properties in the neuronal firing generated by HFS.Approach. HFS pulse sequences with a constant frequency 100 Hz were applied in the afferent fiber tracts of rat hippocampal CA1 region. Unit spikes of both the pyramidal cells and the interneurons in the downstream area of stimulations were recorded. Two fractal indexes-the Fano factor and Hurst exponent were calculated to evaluate the changes of long-range temporal correlations (LRTCs), a typical characteristic of fractal process, in spike sequences of neuronal firing.Mainresults. Neuronal firing at both baseline and during HFS exhibited LRTCs over multiple time scales. In addition, the LRTCs significantly increased during HFS, which was confirmed by simulation data of both randomly shuffled sequences and surrogate sequences.Conclusion. The purely periodic stimulation of HFS pulses, a non-fractal process without LRTCs, can increase rather than decrease the LRTCs in neuronal firing.Significance. The finding provides new nonlinear mechanisms of brain stimulation and suggests that LRTCs could be a new biomarker to evaluate the nonlinear effects of HFS.

BACKGROUND: Positive correlations between low- and high-frequency spectra from stereotactic electroencephalogram (SEEG) recordings have been implicated in pathological brain activity interictally and have been used for ictal detection in both focal and network models. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated SEEG signals in patients who ultimately underwent temporal lobectomy to evaluate their utility in seizure localization and prediction of seizure freedom post-resection. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed cross-frequency correlations between beta and high gamma (HG) interictal SEEG signals from 22 patients. We compared signals based on temporal versus extra-temporal locations, seizure-free (SF) versus non-seizure-free (NSF) outcomes, and mesial (M) versus mesial temporal-plus (M+) onset. RESULTS: Positive cross-correlations were increased in temporal areas. NSF patients showed a higher proportion of positive electrodes in temporal areas. SF patients had a greater proportion of significant channels in mesial versus lateral temporal areas. HG/Beta correlations in mesial versus lateral temporal areas predicted seizure freedom better than ictal SEEG seizure onset localization to M or M+ locations. CONCLUSIONS: We present preliminary data that local HG/Beta correlations may predict epilepsy focus and surgical outcome and may have utility as adjunct methods to conventional SEEG analysis. Further studies are needed to determine strategies for prospective studies and clinical use.

RESUMEN

The effect of quantum steering describes a possible action at a distance via local measurements. In the last few years, several criteria have been proposed to detect this type of correlation in quantum systems. However, there are few approaches presented in order to measure the degree of steerability of a given system. In this work, we are interested in investigating possible ways to quantify quantum steering, where we based our analysis on different criteria presented in the literature.
